Is This Working Anymore?

This week for me has been a lot about rethinking my ideas of work and asking myself, “Is this way of working working for me?”
- 🐢 I’ve been ruminating on an idea I was introduced to a few years ago by a blogger I followed who said she was into “slow blogging” - to slow down when the world is screaming at you to do more. This is not how I have worked over the years. I have often gone for producing as much work as possible as quickly as possible. This has meant that I’ve built a very large back catalog but often at the expense of burnout. I’m feeling the “slow blogging” vibe is coming to my work life more and more 😌
- 🎮 I downloaded the Netflix game Oxenfree onto my iPad a few months back but only this week set any time aside to play it and I was sucked in. It takes me back to some of my favourite point-and-click games like Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and I love it.
- 🎸 I’ve been reliving my teens and listening to Weezer’s back catalogue. I feel immediately happy when I hear their music. Highlights for me are the Blue Album, Maladroit, and the B-side featured on the Mallrats soundtrack, Susanne.
- 🏆 I recently found out (after the awards ceremony was over) that I was nominated for a Production Music Award (PMA) for the track used in The Glass Onion trailer. I did a walkthrough of that track on my trailer music YouTube channel if you’re interested in Neoclassical strings that is! p.s. I didn’t win 😩
- 🎹 On the 11th of December (tomorrow), my piano track Over The Horizon will be released to the world. It’s a re-imagination of one of my piano improvisations I released during lockdown.
- 🦸🏼♂️ I’ve been watching Gen V - a spin-off of Amazon Prime’s The Boys. I’ll be honest, I lost interest very quickly as I just didn’t feel attached to any of the characters. But then, I saw the teaser trailer for The Boys: Season 4 and I am chomping at the bit to see it 🤤
- I read something in Ali Abdaal’s newsletter Sunday Snippets that got me thinking about how I work best. Ali talks about small efforts made consistently or bursts of effort over short periods. For some time now I thought my superpower was little and often but I think I have had it wrong. I think I like sprinting in the form of projects. This is how I have produced almost all of my work over the last decade whether it’s courses, albums, websites etc. This also explains why I struggle to consistently produce videos and podcasts; I work hard and then need a break from it. Now I realise this I think it will help me to set my expectations of myself a lot more clearly, hence the slow blogging.
- Nice thought for you…⬇️
