Here are 8 things in my life this week:
- Some amazing advice from the ever-inspiring Andrew Huang on betting on yourself over chasing the money. He invites you to take that leap of faith (“only the penitent man shall pass” anyone?)
- I enjoy dipping into the bonkers world of Hyperpop - I especially love 100 Gecs - this one is my favourite. The thing that really excites me about it is the apparent “f*ck you” to all the rules; structure, length, production, vocals, instrumentation - it’s basically like a new-new punk rock. It sounds kind of like NOFX made love to a Gameboy and had a musical baby!
- I did a breakdown of The Marvels final trailer this month and decided to include the MIDI in the video so that you could more easily follow along. It was actually more fun for me as I could actually demonstrate what I was talking about.
- Really enjoying Apple’s Lessons in Chemistry starring Brie Larson (hello Captain Marvel) and Lewis Pullman. This trailer sums it up - a really interesting drama with good characters.
- I’ve been writing a lot of horror sound beds recently so wanted to share some of the tricks I use to turn a happy little melody into a total sh*t-fest - in a good way of course.
- The Bridge City Sinners are a really great example of how you can embrace rawness and character all for the better of your music - this really is “folk metal”. It’s kind of like The Dirty Three listened to the Mad Caddies’ track Monkeys let’s “Hey, let’s hire a metal singer whilst we are doing this!”
- I’m still keeping an eye on how filtering my YouTube content into separate channels is working. So far, it’s been a mixed bag if I am totally honest. The best thing has been the extra clarity for me, but the downside, and this is a big one, is that I now feel like I need to consistently publish content on 4+ channels…and I don’t like that feeling!
- In this episode of The Niche Pursuits Podcast (one of my favourite podcasts), the guest spends almost the entire show about the importance of focusing your energy on one project at a time. This has been my biggest flaw over the years, my shiny object syndrome so this came at a really good time for me. I already know the importance of one-pointedness but putting it into practice is another thing altogether…I’m still working on this!
