I have a question for you.

Are you and I wasting our time with Spotify?

Check out these screenshots from my own music distributor, Ditto Music.

Each of these tracks has had varying degrees of success.

Obviously, the track that’s had over 2 million streams is winning. But that is not what’s important.  

The important part is comparing the same tracks with how much the payout is per stream.  

Apple Music is paying between £0.004-0.007 per stream, whereas Spotify is paying between £0.0015-0.003.

That doesn’t seem like a big difference when you are talking pennies but when the track starts to get more streaming action, it really does make a difference.

Check it out:

If I were to get:

• 1000 streams with Apple = £4-7
• 1000 streams with Spotify = £1.50-3

Let’s take that further:

• 1,000,000 streams with Apple = £4,000-7,000
• 1,000,000 streams with Spotify = £1,500-3,000

That is a HUGE difference. Spotify is paying out between 58-62% less per stream.

So every stream on Apple Music is worth two with Spotify.

Don’t even get me started on TikTok/Instagram…£0.00000014 per view 😂

Some people have suggested that the disparity between these aggregators is due to the fact that Apple doesn’t have a free tier…but it also doesn’t have advertisers paying for those precious ad slots.  

I know where I would put my energy!
